Hurfords is a third generation family business strongly dedicated to the native
hardwood timber industry for more than than 80 years.

The history of the Hurford Group of companies began in 1942 during the Great Depression when James Hurford was stood down from his job as a foreman with the NSW Railways. James and his brother pooled their limited resources and went into business renovating and lifting houses in the Lismore region.

While purchasing timber from a local sawmill, James noticed a pile of discarded rough-sawn boards. He bought and paid the mill to run the boards into tongue & groove flooring and achieved a small but effective competitive advantage by utilising the sawmill's machinery and labour

Soon he had saved enough to purchase his own planing machine and began purchasing more
local timber. He went on to produce flooring and other hardwood products for sale. His innovative approach of value adding set a course for the Hurford name to grow steadily and strongly in
both timber milling and retail over the next 8 decades.

From these humble beginnings, the facilities have been ever expanded to rank solidly alongside
both Australian and International competitors. The Hurford Group now uniquely spans across
multiple tiers of industry being a primary producer, manufacturer and wholesaler.

A major local employer, with more than 100 employees,The Hurford Group is a significant contributor
to the regional economy. Their service extends to markets across Australia and the world. Showing
the rest of the world an insight into the magnificence of Australia’s hardwoods.
